I hate having short hair.
I've always had long (long-ish, really) hair. Mid-shoulder blade length, mostly. Enough natural curl to make me hate humid or rainy days, not so much that I couldn't (almost) straighten it with a flat iron.
Because we always want what we can't have, I've always wanted short hair. When I was in middle school, I desperately wanted a Dorothy Hamil haircut. My mom wouldn't agree, though, because my hair was too curly for the style.
Smart mom.
Dumb me.
Back in July, after paying too much attention to a short hair wearing Sarah Jessica Parker, a wild hair had me telling my stylist, "I'm ready for something different!" and ended in me walking out of the salon with a chin-length bob. On the first rainy day, I had a round, orange ball of curly, frizzing hair on my head.
Yea. Not a pretty sight.
Bitten by the short-hair bug, I decided to jump in all the way. A few weeks later, I went back and got an asymmetrical cut, leaving the front chin length, but razor shaved to fuzz up the back of my head.
Not a good look for me. And the growing out part? Nightmare.
My short hair experiment is officially over. It's growing out . . . s-l-o-w-l-y. I had layers put in so hopefully it won't look quite so horrible as it grows.
I hate short hair.
Oh, I have a long litany of reasons.
. . I've gained weight so my face is too round.
. . The back of my head is flat
. . Frizz. Did I mention that?
. . All of my fun, 'night out' clothes were bought to wear with hair brushing my shoulders
. . It makes me look older
Yes, there are a few positives. For one, the time it takes me to style it in the morning has been halved. And, my hair is finally in really good condition - probably because all the damaged, colored and processed hair was ruthlessly cut and buzzed away. And I finally know what my natural hair color is, since it's much too short to bother coloring.
But I miss my long hair. I want it back. . . now. I've toyed with the idea of extensions, but (i) I can't afford them and (ii) I've heard they're very damaging.
I don't have much patience, though.
I have, however, learned my lesson. The hard way.
